Hanford: A Visual History

With a history as eventful and polarizing as Hanford’s, there’s no shortage of outlets for information and resources to learn about what’s happened, what’s going on now, and where the Site is going.

But as visual creatures, we feel that seeing Hanford’s history through photography and video sheds much more light on the challenges, obstacles, progress and goals that will shape the Site for years to come.

Hanford Communities would like to share the following resources for our community to SEE Hanford through historical photos and video that show how much things have changed across decades of cleanup. The resources below are just a sampling of the content available to the public.

The Washington State Department of Ecology provides a wonderful resource for learning more about Hanford’s history, including an engaging story map, an interactive map of the entire Site, as well as highlights on specific buildings, landmarks and more.

In this particular issue of WSU’s eMagazine, they feature a variety of historical photos from Hanford and White Bluffs dating back more than a century to 1909.

Atomic Heritage Foundation

This fascinating resource is a combined effort from the Atomic Heritage Foundation and National Museum of Nuclear Science & History to preserve the history of the Manhattan Project and Atomic Age. It includes video interviews with engineers, reporters, citizens, Native Americans and more from the Manhattan Project era detailing their experiences.

Hanford Communities Video Series

In 2022, Hanford Communities produced a series of videos with the help of DOE and Washington State Department of Ecology. The series covers Hanford’s history, the story of tank waste and an introduction to the DFLAW facility.

For additional resources, each of the major Hanford prime contractors have their own Communications departments with press releases, photo galleries, and video content that are accessible to the general public.
